Health & Safety

Assistant de Prévention : Philippe Dru

All members of the LBDV, whether recently arrived or already present for many years, need to be aware of their rights and obligations in the matter of risk prevention. It is important that everybody knows the rules and recommendations, and make sure they respect them. The safety of all members of the lab is a top priority in our daily lives.

As in all activities, there are risks involved in research. In this document you will find useful information for ensuring the health and safety of you and your colleagues while you are at the LBDV. When you sign the ‘New Arrivals’ sheet, you recognise that you have read this leaflet and agree to the instructions in it.

As director, it is my responsibility to make sure that health and safety rules are properly applied. The leader of each individual research group or service also has more direct responsibility for its members during their daily activities. An important point to remember, however, is that each individual has a primary responsibility for their own safety, as well as that of others.

The Prevention Assistant (AP) and I will always happy to answer any questions you have concerning risk prevention. In daily lab life you can also of course ask any of the technical staff or researchers for advice, in particular if you have any doubts before beginning an experiment or any other new activity. They all have plenty of experience and if they cannot help you directly they will put you in touch with someone who can.

Remember that good communication is the key: If you have doubts but don’t ask advice, you are taking unnecessary risks for yourself and others. By exchanging information freely about good laboratory practice and by vigilant attention about upstream prevention we can together maximise everyone’s safety.

When you first arrive in the LBDV, make sure that the person directly responsible for your work accompanies you around the buildings, in order to introduce you to the personnel and to get to know the premises. The AP will also provide a more specific tour to point out practical features relating to risk prevention.

I am happy to welcome you to the LBDV, and hope you have a productive, happy and safe time here!

LBDV Director

To Newcomers

Income and leaving are very important for the safety in the lab.

Most of accidents can be avoided by applying "good lab practices" and risks associated with each activity.

The team leader or your supervisor must ensure that the person arriving safely exercises experiments in the laboratory.

What to do in case of accident must be perfectly known, hence an introduction to Hygiene and Safety in the laboratory which is systematically made by the prevention assistant at each arrival for a stay of more than a week.

A reception procedure is planned, like a checklist, in order to pass all the administrative stages :

An attestation of enhanced safety training must be completed by the trainee and his direct supervisor, to be submitted to the Prevention assistant : here
